Shadow Keepers
Chapter one - The Escape.
Annabell McKnight kept pacing around her small, clinic-like room as she ocassionally tossed stuff into her small shoulder bag, tears streeking down her face as she replayed the horrid nightmare in her mind.
There was a little girl only about four or five, chained to a hard and cold brick wall. The floor was covered in bright red blood, a deep cut on her arm as she screamed and cried. She sobbed, trying to catch her breath, oxygeon low in the basement celler. Annabell struggled to move, her heart growing heavy with sorrow as she stood there watching, knowing she couldn't help, she was merely an observer. The little girl screamed again, the horrified sound filling the room, her dark brown hair sticking to her clamy face as a tall man walked in, holding a whip. He struk the whip and it slashed across her face, leaving a long trail of blood. The little girl screeched in pain, as did Annabell, feeling the same pain as she recognized who the little girl was, it was herself. Ten years ago. The man bent down towards 5-year old Annabell, as the older one watched.
"Now...tell daddy you love him." He whispered to her, his voice a carress. Annabell gathered all her courage and spat in his face, getting it right in his eye, causing him to stumble back and grab hold of the whip again.
Annabell returned to present day, shaking her head clear as she continued packing. She couldn't stay here...she WOULDN'T stay. She walked confidently to the door, already knowing it was locked. Annabell stood infront of the big, grey stone door, closing her eyes.
"5...29...8..2..63..." She mumbled to herself as she heard the keypad press in the numbers. She waited.
Silence...
And then, the door unlocked. Annabell grinned to herself as she opened the door and carefully walked out. Annabell smiled slightly trying to hide a laugh as she saw all the Guards passed out asleep. The smile faded as she saw one Guard still wide awake.
"Shit..." She whispered in frustration.
She ran, ran as fast as she could, right past the Guard, shoving the entrance door opened. The loud, shrieking alarm went off as Annabell met her best friend, Dawn, at the edge of the field.
"Run!" She screamed, grabbing Dawns arm as they took off, off of the field, away from the Home.
The Home for "mental" patients. People with unique gifts. Gifts that the Guards and Doctors were to stubborn to study...the RIGHT way.
People like Annabell and Dawn.
